Still Cold - But Grateful!

A good weekend...but it's still cold! However, it's not raining or snowing so grateful for that.
Had a good weekend. Heck I was alive and healthy so that's a wonderful thing.
Friday night I went to see a friend in a show in a small theatre space in the Lower East Village. The space was great, in the basement of a building with a nice bar/performance space upstairs. The show itself was was abysmal. Ugh...no acting ability, save for my friend. Sometimes going to support friends in shows can be painful, but at least it was short.
Saturday night I went to the Miss Sobriety Pageant with a friend. It was a hoot. A drag variation on the Miss _____________ (fill in the blank) Pageants! My friend's sponsor won so that was great. A fun night, saw some friends from LA, plus it raised money for the Big Apple Roundup.
Sunday church was wonderful, a great message and beautiful songs. Live for today.
Later, went to the audition for the next convention show. A take off on FOLLIES. A great turnout. Run very professionally. A fun time. Now, we'll see.
Also am working on a two man show with a friend. Songs written by Gay men sung by Gay men. Surprisingly several songwriters have songs I like and want to sing. Knowing they were Gay makes several songs even more powerful. Though Lional Bart didn't come out till later in life, knowing he was Gay gives "Where is Love?" and "As Long As He Needs Me" a new life.
We are aiming for an April 12th date. So, some creative projects set in motion.

Wow, today was like a spring day! It got up to 62 with clear sunny skies.
After the routine of the usual Saturday, I went for a walk down Wall Street, over to Battery Park, around and up along the Hudson River to Battery Park City, up to Tribeca, back around then through the WTC and home.
Got some beautiful photos!
Took about 90 minutes. My first big walk in several months. Too many.
Back on track!

Back to Work

Yesterday was back to work day.
I didn't sleep well the night before, ugh, but made it through the day well enough.
Not too busy but got a lot done. Setting up Media Days.
Scheduling lunches!
Met with Lane after for coffee and chat.
Also bought some new walking shoes at lunchtime and some new jeans on the way home.
LARGE size..not good.
Day was ok for food...Subway thankfully!
Still in that case, 6 inches IS preferred over a Footlong!! :)

Well I started off the day going to New But West, which is on 46th near Broadway. I walked past people already camped out at 9:50AM. I just looked up at the place where the ball would be 14 hours later and did my own HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Later I met up with Eric and we went over to Lincoln Center while we waited for Mark to get off of work.
Then Eric and I walked around and watched all the crazy people having crazy fun.
Went to Emmett's at 51st and 8th for the party which was nice, low key and tame in comparison.
After midnight the party slowly broke up and I went over to Broadway at 51st and did my "ritual" of singing on Broadway. I sang "I Still Believe in Me" from the TV show FAME.
My request is to sing INSIDE a theatre on Broadway this year!! As a performer, not an audience member.

Last Day of 2011

Last night it was warmer, than the night before thankfully, so I walked through City Hall Park and then walked to the mid point of the Brooklyn Bridge. I wanted to think, reflect and just enjoy where I live. A year is ending, a new one beginning. Tonight I am meeting Eric and Mark, then going to church, then to Emmett's party and probably will end up on Broadway at 12:15 or so to sing as I have in previous years. A great way to start the new year!! I am grateful to be alive, sober, healthy and willing!

These stuffed animals all mean something special to me. The big rabbit was given to me as an Easter basket adornment, by David and Terry, the Easter before Terry passed. The little pink pig was given to me by Susan Lurie to keep me safe on my move back to the east coast. The tiger was my mother's. She got it in Germany. She gave it to me when I was scared to sleep alone in the basement when we lived in Hayfield. She would sit outside my room doing jigsaw photos while I fell asleep. She died that Easter. The Gerry Mahoney doll was given to me by my father, the first Christmas after my Mom died. He did such a great job making that a special Christmas for us. The little bear was a gift from a friend to help me feel special. the Kringle Bear was given to me by my friend Donna Lillard the Christmas before I moved to LA. I set that bear in the back seat of my car and it watched over me as I drove cross country. I felt safer!!
All gifts from people who care about me. All people I care about...irregardless of the gift. Treasured memories!

Last night I went to my church, Marble Collegiate. What a lovely service, singing, hymns, communion and a message of HOPE.
Up now and going to the 11AM service.

Well, the show was a hit and so was I. Hah, my character, Mama, was as far over the top as you can go without tipping over...so naturally I got lots of yuks. Everyone did a great job though and all shone...once again if I get out of my own way, miracles happen.

We are doing a take off on BYE BYE BIRDIE for the Holiday show. Tomorrow night. In the biz it's known as an Industrial. For a non profit group.
I'm playin' MAMA!! Picture Totie Fields in her glory days.
They rewrote the song KIDS to be about CRABS and I sing most of that one.
Should be a hoot, pics to follow, but unlike CINDERELLA...it ain't gonna be pretty.

I love NY! You run into all sorts of people just walking around. Last night after rehearsal and dinner, I was standing on the corner of 50th and 8th with a friend when I noticed this handsome man walking towards me in the crosswalk. I recognized him and it was indeed, Chris Meloni from SVU. He was with his wife and two kids. They must have seen a show or something and were out walking. I pointed him out to my friend, subtly as he was walking right towards us. He stopped a few feet away by the subway entrance deciding which way to go. My friend was excited as he hadn't seen a celeb up close before. Then I noticed a young girl with her parents who had noticed him and she was so excited!! (I found out later that he had done a show on Nick for Kids called GYM). The girls parents where encouraging her to go up and tell Chris hello. She was embarressed and they kept pushing her to go. By that time Chris and his family were walking away...north on 8th Avenue. I don't know if she ever caught up with him, but it was a fun star sighting nonetheless.

8 years ago right about now I watched my father Lt. James Wesley Westbrook take his last breath. I was on the phone with my brother Randy Westbrook and the nurses were with me in the VA Hospital in Wichita, KS. No offense Dad, but I never figured I'd miss you this much..but...you taught me what it really means to love someone, warts and all. Think of you often and you are always present in some way, shape or form. Thank you for the give of life and all that you taught me. Miss ya!

Chita and Bye Bye Birdie

Ok, Broadway buffs...today at the Shetler Rehearsal studios near Studio 54, we were rehearsaing for our holiday show..a take off on BYE BYE BIRDIE. Well, Chita Rivera was in the orignal production. Steve and I noticed that THE VISIT was rehearsaing in the big room next to us...an Actor's Fund Benefit..but when we got there they were on a lunch break. Well, we were rehearsing THE TELEPHONE HOUR and Steve joked wouldn't it be funny if Chita poked her head in...well...SHE DID!!! She opened the door and peeked in...all smiles and looking great..she said something like "hey I know that song"! Everyone was all a twitter..especially Armando. She wished us well and we thanked her. It'd be like if you were playing a pick up baseball game and Joe DiMaggio or Mickey Mantle came over. A true NY moment! When she wished us well she looked over and caught my eye and I said Thank you! A sweet and fun and wonderful Broadway lady!!

Angels From Claflin

I took this on my way over to David's. This is on Broadway across from the Winter Garden Theatre where MAMMA MIA is playing.
I had a nice hello from my Claflin Angels.
I went over to my friend David's apt. for a group gathering. About 20 people there, most I knew, a few new faces.
Lots of food and lots of desserts. Everyone enjoyed themselves. I got to talk to a few people. Nick, who is a comedian, grew up in Kansas City. I told him about my Kansas connection and had even worn my Dad's Jayhawk jacket over. Nick also lived in LA so we had things in common to compare.
Also ended up talking to Shawn. He had told me before that he knew of Claflin because his school played football against them and he had played on their football field. I played around that field many times in summer visits to my Grandma Hammer's. Never on it as they always had it closed.
Well, Shawn and I were talking and then David said he wanted all of us around the room to saw what we were thankful for. All of a sudden, I looked over at Shawn standing next to me...and I realized...he knew Claflin...he'd been there and seen it and seen that place I call "home", my Bountiful. On my way over to David's I looked up to the skies and said hello to all my Claflin angels..missing them.
Then...it dawned on me...I like to believe...that standing next to Shawn...it was like all of my Claflin angels saying hello to me. They heard me! My heart got so full!! Shawn is my new Claflin connection. Who woulda thunk in a city of millions of people...that I'd end up right next to him!! When I said what I was thankful for...I mentioned this.
I'd give anything to be sitting in "God's little acre" with all of my Claflin folk...but for a few minutes...I felt like I was.
Thank you God!! I really needed that today!

Very sad weekend. Mrs. Evelyn Lauder, the wife of Leonard Lauder, died Saturday afternoon after a long batter with cancer.
Then Sunday morning I found out my friend Dee Tucker Petree, class of '79, died Saturday as well. She had beaten her cancer, but the chemo had caused blood clots which caused multiple problems and her kidneys shut down.
So sad. One woman, 75 the other 49.
Both lost too soon.
Mrs. Lauder had battled her cancer for years and had created the BCRF and the Pink Ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Dee befriended me in high school when I had very few friends and even wrote me letters at college my first year there.
Sad...the cycles of life, but still sad.

9/11 Memorial - David Laychak

I went to the 9/11 Memorial again last night to get some photos of the name of a high school classmate who died at the Pentagon. David Laychak was a year behind me, but through Facebook I have gotten to know about him from his close friends. Once again the memorial is moving, touching, sad, hopeful and just breathtaking. I got there just as the sun was setting so I got some different shots. Well done everyone involved!! Thank you for honoring our friends!!

The 9/11 Memorial

Instead of "celebrating" Halloween, my friend Vito and I went to the 9/11 Memorial. I had reserved the tickets last month when it first opened and this was the first day that I could find a time that was open. We went after work.
The Memorial is everything it should be. All of the planning and delays paid off because it is one of the most moving sites I have ever been to. Finally, a place for the focus of grief, love, honoring loved ones, hope and courage. Everything, in my opinion, is perfect!
They have included all of the names of all of the people who died that day, in NY, PA and DC. Everyone that could be accounted for, is accounted for.
Hopefully all of the souls that needed a place to find comfort, can find it here.
A classmate from Hayfield, David Laychek, was killed at the Pentagon. His name is here as well. I found it on one of the kiosks that helps people find names to visit.
May this type of tragedy never happen again. So sad, so senseless.
Rest in Peace all, rest in Peace.
A place of calm in the midst of activity.

Saturday is snowed. Today they are putting up the Christmas Tree in front of Radio City Music Hall, and it's Halloween!
Last week it was warm and sunny, then it got cooler, then snow!
Mother Nature is all messed up!
Today is Halloween so the candy man will be busy!!
Actually after work Vito and I are going over to see the 9/11 Memorial. I signed up for a spot when it opened, and this was the first day I could get two tickets. I'd much rather pay respects and honor heroes, then watch people in costumes be annoying. To each his own, but Halloween isn't a fave "holiday" of mine. I'm silly and wear costumes all the time. :)

My stepmother Dolores Bieberle Westbrook, stepbrother Glen Bieberle, stepsister Janice Bieberle Klenda, stepsister Kay Bieberle Demel today in Hoisington. Sadly, burying Keith Bieberle today, eldest son.

My brother Randy, nephew Jason Anthony Westbrook (9 1/2 years old) in Claflin Cemetery after the funeral in Hoisington. Visiting the graves of our Granparents and Aunt Emma, as well as our Mother and the marker for my father (he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery but we had a marker placed next to our mother, in the town where they met).

Remembering Keith Bieberle

This is an old photo, 1988, but I wanted to honor my stepbrother Keith Beiberle, far right in the photo. He passed suddenly Monday evening. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was a great father, husband, brother and son. He was and always will be held in high regard by all who knew him.

I took the Bolt Bus down to VA this past weekend. I left Friday morning from 6th and Grand with low clouds hanging over my head. When we got to just outside of Baltimore for a pit stop, we made it from the bus to the service building then it poured rain, so we had to run back to the bus in the rain.
It stopped not long after so that by the time we got to DC it was sunny.
I took the MARC train through Maryland to Point of Rocks and Sonya, George and Jason picked me up.
Saturday was beautiful weather, clear, cool, breezy. My older sister Cheryl and I went for a walk and it was just heavenly.
Later we had a BBQ at Sonya's (she is renting Randy and June's house as they have moved to Colorado). Randy and Jason had come back to get Sonya's camper that she is giving them. See, we DO share as a family!
Sunday we all went to Arlington Cemetery to pay our respects to Dad. It was a beautiful day!!
They left to finish up plans for Randy and Jason and Sonya's departure Monday morning (Sonya is helping drive then will fly back home). I ended up meeting up with my friend Deb Tsimbidis (a classmate from Hayfield) and we spent the rest of the day talking at her lovely new home. Not far from Hayfield actually!! Then she and I went to Lorton to her favorite Italian restaurant and our classmate Chuck Davisson met us there for a bit. A lovely mini reunion!
Deb took me back to Union Station to catch the 8:30PM Bolt Bus. I got back to NYC and was home by 1:00AM.
A lovely, short but sweet weekend.
Perfect in every way!!!

Rembering Kevin McCann

Not a sad day, but a day to remember all the more that life is precious and to be lived to the fullest. Kevin did just that, along with his partner Joseph Osuna. San Francisco Joe!

It's Time to Dress for Fall

Well, Thursday was a hot humid day. Then, in the late afternoon we had a big wind/drizzle come through and the temperature dropped 20 degrees. Since then, it's been fall!Temps in the 50's and 60's.
This morning/early afternoon I went for a walk in Central Park. The sky was clear with streaks of white. Perfect! I walked from the gym, 49th and 5th, up to Columbus Circle then into Central Park. I walked up to Strawberry Fields and then exited at 72nd and Central Park West, near the Dakota. Then hopped on the subway and came home. A perfect morning!!

10 Years Later, 10 Years Stronger

I took these last night on my way home from the subway. The top photo just took my breath away and brought some tears. Yet, I stopped and thought about what we have accomplished, how we have pulled together to mourn but also pulled together to share and form Hope.

Yesterday afternoon I went over to the World Trade Center. I took my father Lt. Col. James W. Westbrook's miltary nametag with me. He fought in 3 wars for the country he loved.
Today I remember, pray, hope and hold good thoughts for all affected.

A Great Labor Day Weekend

What a great weekend!
Had Friday off so slept in and then spent the day seeing two friends I hadn't seen in a while.
Went to the Center, then went to dinner with Eric at the Bus Stop. Nice and relaxing!
Saturday I went to a meeting at New But West, went to the gym, then met with my friend Lane and spent 2 hours relaxing and talking in Bryant Park next to the small carousel. We had lunch at Chipotle then I went to Espirit to exchange the shirt Eric had given me, for a larger size (and a different color. They had blue and I love blue!) Thank you Eric!
I then did laundry, then met up with my friend Lisa Gourdine and her goddaugther MacKenzie. Lisa and I worked together at MCA/Universal Home Video in the 90's. She was here for the weekend AND we both share a birthday, Sept. 1st. It was sooooo great to see her and talk and laugh. She and MacKenzie hadn't seen Ground Zero so we walked around then went over to the Marina on the other side in Battery Park City. We laughed and talked. At one point Lisa laughed and threw her head back and her sunglasses flew off her head into the Hudson River, which made us laugh even harder. It was great to see her and hopefully she'll be back again sooner rather than later!
Sunday I went to church and it was a wonderful, powerful service. I then spent the rest of the day just relaxing and napping and scanning and uploading photos from my freshmen yearbook to Facebook.
It was truly moving uploading photos to Facebook. Several class members have passed and we created a page to remember them. Since I had the yearbook I was able to upload many photos. The outpouring of love, memories, grief, joy and the continued life was truly moving. I connected and reconnected with so many and it was really a wonderful way to celebrate my life and realize how much I have and how grateful I am.
Monday I went to New But West and ended up qualifying at the last minute. That helped me to pull the weekend together and really put it into perspective. Then I met up with my friend Isaac and we went over to Christopher Street pier and talked for 2 hours. A wonderful breeze blowing off the Hudson.
Aftewards he went home and I ended up meeting up with, finally, Ruth Gersky, a friend of my friend Susan Lurie from LA. Ruth and I had been trying to meet up since I moved her but never could sync up. Thanks to Facebook, Hurrican Irene and my birthday, we finally connected and spent almost 2 hours in the garden at the Center talking and laughing and enjoying the early evening. A wonderful new friend!
Got home and my roommate was finally home from his long weekend away, so we talked and filled each other in on our activities and capped a wonderful weekend off.
Thankful, grateful, happy!!
Thank you to everyone who made my weekend wonderful.
Good thoughts and memories to those who left too soon.

Got to see Tammy Scruggs, here with a friend for the day. We met up by Ground Zero and spent somee time in City Hall Park catching up. Dinner with Eric and Phil at Rockinghorse. Cupcakes and ice cream with my roommate Joey C the night before. Oreo Cookie cake given to me by my co-worker Laura.
Thank you Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook. Literally overwhelmed by the Facebook emails and wishes. Wonderful.
I am grateful for all these wonderful people in my life, either in person or virtually!

Today I turn 51. I am overwhelmed by the cards, emails, texts and calls I am getting.
The first birthday after my Mom died everyone forgot, or I felt like they did. I carried that feeling around for way too long, until my friend Lynn Osborn helped me to let go of that.
Now I am grateful and humbled just to be remembered, thought of and reminded just how fortunate I am.
Thinking of Mom and Dad today...thank you for spending all those hours with me in the hospital, first because I was born prematurely and then when I got the chicken pox, thanks Cheryl..hah.
Blessed...doing the best I can and the best I can is doing!!

It was still windy but the sky was clearing and the sunset was so amazing!! Waves were choppy but only splashing over not rolling over.

I took these this morning about 11:30. Breezy but just some sprinkles and no damage, thankfully!
Thankfully the storm passed and no damage. We didn't lose power and in my neighborhood no damage. The outlaying areas and beaches hit hardest.
Thankfully the city took precautions.
Grateful and glad to God that he took care of us!!

Earthquakes and Hurricanes

I took these photos last night as I walked down along Battery Park City. All was calm and balmy. That's Anderson Cooper preparing to broadcast down at Battery Park with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Well, the east coast had an earthquake this week and now we are gearing up for a hurricane!! Mother Nature is pissed.
I didn't feel the earthquake at work but many did. Now with Hurricane Irene barreling up the coast I'm hunkering down.
I sorta joked that I survived 17 years in LA with riots, floods, drought, earthquakes, El Nino, mudslides...but for most of those I was prepared or spared.
I lived in the east coast for most of my life and survived hurricanes and floods.
In Kansas we survived tornados.
Dust storms in VA back in the 60's.
I believe God will protect me, as long as I do my part and don't do anything foolish.
Today...I will hunker down, do the best I can.
And...trust!

Remembering Terry Brenneis

Yesterday amidst all the "excitement" of the earthquake that rattled the east coast and fears about the approaching hurrican Irene, I took time to remember that yesterday was one year of living without my friend Terry Brenneis.
It sometimes seems that time stands still, then all of a sudden, it's a year later.
I think of Terry often, especially every Sunday in church.
He is missed but he is never far from our hearts and thoughts.
I just spent time dogsitting for David with Beau. I thought of Terry daily and even prayed aloud for his help with Beau.
I can't say I felt his presence, but I did hold him in my thoughts and heart.

Last Thursday at work we had a talent contest at work. I sang an original song, "Quest For Love". I thought it would be good since it's a power ballad, builds to a high note and soars.
Well, there were 12 contestents. I did well enough. In hindsight, wardrobe and song choice are key. I have a hard time just standing still and singing, but that is what they preferred.
The guy that won sang "The Impossible Dream".
We all ended up winning though as the company awarded us $150.
Still, live and learn. Try!
We only had 3 minutes so I started the song at the second verse.

Today marks my 7th year Anniversary of moving to NYC and living!
On July 11th, 2004 I spent my first night along in New York City. My brother Randy had helped me move up here and stayed a couple of days, but he left that day to return to VA and that night I spent my first day along here!!!]
Ironically, a year earlier, July 11th, 2003 was my last day at Maple Drive Restaurant. I had worked there for 3 years, but they combined my position with another and let me go. Which turned out to be a blessing. God had a plan!
I went to Kansas that weekend to help my Dad celebrate his birthday on July 13th!
In early November I was working part time at Mossler, Deasy & Doe, across from Maple Drive, when I got the call that my father was dying, so I flew to Kansas to be with him.
Because I wasn't working full time, I was able to stay there and be with him when he died, then stay with my stepmother Dolores and help her transition. It was the hardest time of my life, but I was able to do it with God's help and the help of so many friends.
I wasn't sure whether to stay in LA. I tried, but couldn't get a job.
I decided to try both NY and DC. My friend Steven Zeidman emailed me that he got another job but had a 2 year lease on an apartment and didn't want to lose the security, so asked if I wanted to take it over. I was afraid, but prayed and a series of events, surrounding WICKED the Musical, led me there. I checked out the apt, loved it, found out I could audition for WICKED, did so (didn't get cast) but it showed me I was good enough to make it here. So, within a month, I was here.
I have had some amazing experiences, many of them recorded on here!!! Thankfully!
I have some wonderful friends and a great church!! This morning the Choir Director asked me if I'd like to help lead a song at the end of the month!! AND, my company is having a talent contest here at work this week, so I'm going to sing one of my Demo songs!! QUEST FOR LOVE!! Winner gets $1,000! HOPE.
So, life is good and life is God.
Funny yesterday I was walking around Greenwich Village with my friend Phil. It's so different then it was in the 80's. I remember walking on Christopher Street with Bobby and Andy and it was NOT pretty. Nor was the waterfront.
Now, it is all lovely!!! Clean and beautiful.
Funny, when I lived in VA, DC was nasty, but in the course of living there, they really cleaned it up.
When I moved to LA, Hollywood was run down!!! In the course of my living there, they really cleaned it up.
NY was ahead of the game, Guiliani cleaned it up before I got here!
Now, I live 2 blocks from Ground Zero, one block from Broadway!! The Freedom Tower is rising above!

A friend of mine, Glenn Connor, sent me this pic. What a memory blast. I had one of those.
In the summertime I would go visit my Grandmother Mary Hammer, in Claflin, KS. Every night I had to take a bath. I had longer hair and it took forever to dry, especially in the humid night air. She didn't want me to go to bed with wet hair, lest I get sick/catch a cold. So, she finally relented and bought me this. It took forever to dry and really didn't do the job, but I had it for a while. I think it was one of the first "hair dryers" for MEN!.
And, to this day, I don't go to bed with wet hair, for the very same reason.

Yesterday afternoon I went out, walked along my street, Nassau, till I got to Wall Street. The New York Stock Exchange and the statue of George Washington, two historic places, right in my neighborhood.
I walked my usual route along Water Street, over to Battery Park, where I spied Lady Liberty in all her Glory! I proceeded up along the Hudson River, where many people were gathered to watch the fireworks. I didn't feel like sitting out there waiting, so I did my walk then came home and watched the fireworks on TV. My walk provided me with the Gratitude...we are Free because so many Brave men and women have given their lives in battle. Never take it for granted.
I try not to, on a daily basis.
I am Proud to be an American.

Blah! Starting Friday night and continuing now...thisveryminute...I have had Strep Throat. It's times like this when I wish I had my tonsils removed when I was younger. Ah well. Body aches, fever, golf balls in my throat with razor blades attached...that's what it feels like. ICK. It's just one side, the left side, go figure.
I have gone out a few times and did go to work on Monday, but have been home yesterday and today. Got some antibiotics Monday morning so hopefully they will kick in NOW!
I missed Pride! Luckily I was able to watch church online!
Thanks to technology I don't feel alone, Facebook keeps me connected.
HOPEFULLY I'll be back to work tomorrow.
Back on track, ready for the 4th of July!!

Thursday was Gay Pride Day at my office! They had these signs all over the place! They had a panel after work in the company cafe to discuss how Gays have made strides.
I tell you when I was a kid I never thought this would happen. I can celebrate who I am at work.
Now, thanks to the NY SENATE, I can get married in the state of NY!!

This weekend is Gay Pride Weekend in NYC!
Things sure have changed since my first Gay Pride Parade/Festival in Washington, DC in 1979.
I have changed since then, so has the world, so has Pride.
My first Pride Parade my friend Bennie and I were afraid to actually march IN the parade..so we walked along side. Sometimes we'd jump in the road and walk a bit but then we'd be afraid and get back on the side. I don't remember floats, just people walking, carrying signs, marching.
It was different then. Most of us couldn't be out at work or at home, so we lived in the dark or in lies or both. Just letting people know you were Gay, could mean loss of job, friends, family or all!
When I say I am Proud to be Gay now, that is just one slice of the whole that is me!
Mostly it says I am not ashamed anymore. To feel shame means that I think someone has something over me or that I did something wrong or bad.
I was made to feel as a child and teen that being Gay was wrong, bad and worse! No child should be made to feel like that, especially from adults!!
We were excluded and we wanted to be included.
Exclusive clubs vs inclusive groups.
There was a time where the only place I could go to find others "like me" was a Gay Bar, in a bad/unsafe section of Southeast DC.
No wonder so many Gay men and women felt less then. We were made to feel that way.
Well, NO MORE!!
Through years of therapy, 12 step work and just growing older, I refuse to be shamed for being Gay. Those who say it's a choice should try changing their own sexuality. It's not that easy! I prayed and prayed and tried, but to no avail. I asked God to change me and he didn't. I asked God to kill me and he didn't. I heard in an AA meeting once, "one morning I woke up and realized God didn't want me dead, he wanted me alive, so I better make the most out of my life".
That is what I am attempting to do.
Now, when I watch a Gay Pride parade, I am disappointd, to some degree. I do get turned off by a lot of what I see, but, it is not for me to judge, otherwise I am right where those who judged me are. I can choose to not like or approve, but I don't need to judge or condemn. I do like that now, it's more of a celebration and rejoicing of living!!
There is still a long way to go to win and gain all the rights we are due. I may not want to get married, yet, but I want the rights and the respect that come from being equal. When Gay kids are shown they can't get married or can't be accepted, what does that show them? So many people point fingers, when they should take a look at themselves. Judge not lest ye be judged.
We all matter, we all deserve and we are all worthy!!
Besides, being Gay is just part of me.
I am proud to be alive.
I am proud to be a Gay Christian.
I am proud to be sober!
I am proud to be the child of a military (USAF) father.
I am proud to be recovered in many areas of my life.
I am proud to be talented.
I am proud to be the best person I can be!
I make mistakes, I am not perfect. I am willing to learn and I am willing to change, where I can.
I try to do the best I can at living the way Jesus taught!

The Best Is Yet to Come!

A friend of mine emailed me this morning that he feels his best years are behind him. I told him to listen to the song "The Best is Yet to Come" and think about things that he can look foward to.
I have to do the same for myself. If I focus on that fact, then I'll never want to go forward. That's what hope is all about, looking forward and striving for goals and setting my sights on the present and the future.
It is scary, the way things are lately, especially with the weather and the political climate. There is part of me that thinks..maybe we ARE heading towards the end of the world....BUT...if I focus on that and think negatively, what's the point? I'll just be miserable and not care!
I ran into a co-worker at the water cooler, yes we still have those, and he said "you always seem so positive". Well, I try to be and when I am around people I can focus more on that.
When I am alone I can fall into that same rut as many do. Which is why I have to, want to, make some changes and start making some plans and following through on commitments.
I didn't get sober to be this misearable.
Into action!!
Gay Pride Weekend is coming up. So many are poo-pooing it as just another excuse to get wasted. It's different for me. I'm not so much proud of just being Gay, I am proud of being ME! My first Gay Pride in Washington DC was scary. My friend Bennie and I were too afraid to march in the parade. Back then, 1979, it wasn't about floats and drag queens and politicians, it was about walking opening as Gay men and women. I was afraid people would throw things, so we walked alongside the parade. Still, it was exhilerating being out and in the light and letting people see that I was Gay and not hiding in the shadows. It was freeing!
I want to get back to that feeling. I have taken some actions, meeting with the musical director at my church to see how I might fit in at Marble Collegiate Church with my singing.
I have to take actions. I have been a bit lazy and lethargic and it shows. I want to break free from the rut I created for myself. Time to get out of it and into another groove.
Remind me of this when I want to isolate!!

I had last week off for a Staycation, but back to work today.
I just spent a long time on Facebook back and forth with Hayfield Memories.
I love technology. I just had conversations with people in different places at the same time with people from different times in my life, at the same time.

One person was there the night my mother died and his mother came over and took us to her house so my father could grieve.

One person went to high school with me and we never spoke, but now we talk all the time.

One person went to colleg with me and directed me in a scene from Androcles and the Lion. She was also a fairy in Midsummer Night's Dream.

I also talked to a friend of mine and his wife. Another friend called me from CA and was on his way to an AA meeting. Sharing the intimidating feeling that sometimes precludes going to a new meeting.

I am a blessed man...just have to remind myself.

And...ice cream and junk food, though may taste good, are poison.

I am powerless, but not helpless.

Another day...is done.

Tonight at Marble Collegiate, Rev. Jay Bakker spoke for the WeWo group hosted by GIFTS, the Gay and Lesbian group. WeWo is Wednesday Worship, which is much more relaxed and casual then Sunday services are.
Jay spoke about being Straight and an Ally for the Gay and Lesbian groups. I was very impressed with him. He has his own church in Brooklyn, if you click on the link above.
After the service I thanked him and he shook my hand and gave me a hug! If more Straight men were like him, religion would be a lot less fractured.

It was also the AAnniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous, 76 years ago Dr. Bob and Bill W. got sober together.
Thank God for both. AA has saved and changed so many lives, including mine.
Judy gave so many amazing performances and changed the way singers entertain.
She also gave us all hopes and dreams with her loving, honest performance in THE WIZARD OF OZ!

I took these photos on Monday as I took a long walk, no not off a short pier, but along the Hudson River from Battery Park up along Battery Park City. This atrium was damaged when the Twin Towers fell and now the Freedom Tower is rising above and the sun was shining down. The rose trellis is a bit south from here next to a children's playground.

One friend of mine, actually the one who got me motivated to start this blog, has stopped posting on hers.
She's a busy, successful actress though, while I have much time sitting in front of a computer at work and at home.
So, if you read this and like it, let me know.
The BEST part of this blog, for me, has been helping people reconnect with long lost friends. Sadly, most of the time it's been when they read my blog and find their friend has passed on.
Still, I know for myself it helps to know and helps with closure.
For, we all matter, we all count and we all deserve!

Another year has come, today marks the day I buried both parents. One, Mom, in Claflin, Kansas April 15, 1971.
Dad, April 15, 2004 in Arlington Cemetary.
Death and Taxes..the only certain thing.

Today is my little brother Randy's birthday!! Now I have to say younger brother because he's not so little anymore.
My earliest memory is sitting in the car in the parking lot of the hospital waiting for my dad to come back with our mom and new little brother. Seems like we waited forever! Still, I do remember. I was 3 at the time.
Well, I just spoke to him this weekend and he and June and nephew Jason are now in Colorado, near Denver. Well, June isn't out there full time yet, but soon will be.
Randy says he's happy and really enjoys it out there. He helps in the kitchn at Jason's school and is having a ball! Randy is the lunch daddy!!!
Mom and Dad would be pleased. As is his big brother!
Celebrate today! Randy Westbrook day!!!

Missing Mom

40 years ago tonight my mother Yvonne "Vonnie" Eileen Hammer Westbrook, died suddenly of acute pancreatitis.
Today when I walked through Central Park and saw all the flowers, the birds, the children, the women who were pregnant..I thought of Mom.
Sad, yes, but no longer do I let this bring me down.
She gave me many gifts..my laughter, singing, caring, loving and my life.
You are remembered Mom. Never forgotten.

Sad day, Elizabeth Taylor died today at the age of 79.
As previously blogged, I did a number in a show back on LA in the 90's, a gentle spoof of all her last names.
I wrote a letter telling her about the show and she sent me this note on a card. I kept it and framed it along with the photos I had from the show.
She was a class act and a broad, in the best sense of both words.
She did so much to help with HIV/AIDS awareness when so many were afraid or ashamed to do so.
She was at Liza Minnelli's wedding to David Guest held at my church, Marble Collegiate. I like to think of her and Michael Jackson sitting up there when I am in church sometimes.
She leaves a legacy that is unmatched. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
I love you, Elizabeth Taylor, Hilton, Wilding, Todd, Fisher, Burton, Burton, Warner, Fortenski!!

He's been gone almost 5 years now.
Still miss him, still think of him.
Kylie is coming to the US again to tour. This time I may go see her. It won't be the same without Cary, but he'll be there with me for sure!

Sadly, I found out that a fellow classmate from Hayfield High School days, Brian O'Sullivan (Class of '78) passed away.

Thanks to Facebook, we all have kept each other informed and many will be going to his memorial service tomorrow in VA.
I hope, in some way, he knows he much he was loved and cared for.
He will be missed!!

Winter Blahs

Well the cold and not being able to go for my long walks has been getting me into the winter blahs. Trying not to, but it makes it "easier" to just stay in and keep warm!
BUT there have been flashes of spring so hope is on the way!!
We did get a light dusting of snow on Monday, President's Day. I did venture out to the gym near City Hall, took this photo near the World Trade Center. The Freedom Tower is on it's way up!

Today is my sister Sonya's birthday! Ah, and it's Valentine's Day!
I remember one birthday Sonya got an Olive Oyl doll. She would chew on the hair and I would chew on the nose!
Then we'd eat Valentine's candy!

Today would have been Lou and Lorraine Hammer's 64th wedding anniversary.
Sadly, they were not able to celebrate it together. Lorraine's passing in December, though a blessing, means this year they are apart.
Uncle Lou is not one for being sentimental or sappy, but I know he had to have missed her deeply today.
I thought of them both and hope in some way, they got to celebrate it some way.

Winter Blahs

Have had the winter blahs the last couple of weeks, nothing bad just when this happen all I want to do is go home and be lazy. However, hopefully, winter is on the way out. We have a had a few warmer days and the days themselves are staying lighter longer, always a good sign. I like leaving work and still having a bit of daylight left.
I've missed my outdoor walks. I have had a few brisk walks but when it's cold I walk too fast and hurt my feet, well nothing major but snowboots aren't the best walking shoes.
Still all is good..I'm alive, healthy and have much to be grateful for.
